Longest Rail Tunnels of India






1. India is home to many fastest growing industries like mega structure of Civil work, whether its bridgesamazing cloverleaf or elevated freeway in Indian cities.

2. Indian road and rail network are one of the largest transport network in the world and bridges, Tunnels play a major role to complete the connectivity across the country.

3. There are many longer tunnels under construction in the Himalayas ranges as part of Indian railway.

4. Most of the tunnel in India are located in Western Ghat and Himalayas ranges.

5. Maliguda Tunnel is the highest broad-gauge railway tunnel in India and the second highest in the world.


Karbude Tunnel


1. Karbude Tunnel was the longest rail tunnel in India before Pir Panjal tunnel

There is a 6.5 kilometres long Tunnel.

Konkan railway line situated between Ukshi and Bhoke station.


4. The preceding station on the line is Ukshi railway station and the next station is Ratnagiri railway station. Year of opening: 1997.

KARBUDE Tunnel remained India's longest Rail Tunnel till the India Government gave Green light to the Railways to plan and construct Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel.

Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel


1. The 11.2 km long. Start of construction: 2005. Year of opening: 2013.


2. Asia’s 2nd longest railway tunnel. It is also known as Banihal railway tunnel. CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR: Hindustan Construction Company.

The great tunnel is located on the highest mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal range in middle of Himalayas. It was built at a cost of Rs10bn ($201.8m).


4. It is a part of the Jammu–Baramulla line.

The tunnel is 8.40 meters (27.6 ft) wide with a height of 7.39 meters (24.2 ft).

There is a three-meter-wide (9.8 ft) road along the length of the tunnel for the maintenance of railway tracks and emergency relief.

It takes approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds for the train to cross the tunnel.

The boring was completed in four years in October 2011, its lining and laying of rail tracks was completed in the next one year and trial run commenced on 28 December 2012

9. The tunnel was commissioned on 26 June 2013 and commercial runs started from 27 June 2013.

At May 2021, people can travel from Jammu Tawi or Udhampur to Banihal by road and take the train from Banihal to Srinagar through the Banihal railway tunnel.
